Service to humanity is service to God, says Nirmala Sitharaman

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Saturday that the Udupi Pejawar Mutt was doing a real service to God by serving needy children through Sri Krishna Balanikethana in Udupi.

She was speaking after inaugurating the Sri Vishwesha Tirtha Sevadhama and the extension block of the balanikethana, run by the Sri Krishna Sevadhama Trust at Kukkikatte in Udupi.

The minister said, “They say ‘nara seva’ (service to humanity) is ‘narayana seva’ (service to God) and what the mutt did is true service to humanity”.

MP Rajya Sabha of Karnataka, Ms Sitharaman had provided ₹20 lakh for the construction of the expansion block from her MP area development fund. She said that when some associates of the seer mentioned the requirements of the balanikethana, she agreed to provide funds. Public money was being used for a noble cause, she said.

The minister said his family has a long association with the Udupi Sri Krishna Mutt and continues to have the same. The late Vishwesha Tirtha of Pejawar Mutt was a beacon of light to all who professed the Hindu dharma and sacrificed his life in the service of humanity.

The balanikethana, Ms. Sitharaman said, was not only for destitute children, but also for children whose parents needed help. She only contributed a little bit to a big project that was being accomplished in bits and pieces. The presence of a temple for Subrahmanya bodes well in the institution as Subrahmanya had a lot to offer parents and society.

The institution’s child helpline was also a nice concept because the government wants the safety of every child in the country, she said.

Pejawar Seer Mutt Vishwaprasanna Tirtha Swami, Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Development Shobha Karandlaje, MP K. Raghupathi Bhat, CMC Chairman Sumitra Nayak and others were present.
