Executive Mayor Cllr Sello Dada Morero addressed City of Johannesburg employees at the Metro Center on Thursday, October 13, 2022. He told city officials he was once one of them during his transfer to the finance department. He told employees that he sees them, hears them, and will do all he can to support and encourage an effective workspace that is efficient and caring for its workforce.
“Workers are a vital and most important part of the organizational body. You are the ones who serve the City, as such you must dedicate your life to this organization, but in return the City must also look after your well- be,” Mayor Morero said.
He urged workers to make Johannesburg a world-class African city and improve their work ethic.
“We all have challenges and needs. It is a call from us as leaders to work together. We want you, as employees, to fully support us because we are going to fully support you. The City of Johannesburg should not just be a job, it should be the employer of choice and you should be happy and proud to be employed by the organization,” he added.
Additionally, Mayor Morero said he will engage in engagements with each department over the next two weeks. He also mentioned that employees will be heard and seen and not victims of having raised their concerns.
“Changes and solutions to employee concerns will not be rectified overnight. However, we can promise to break it down into achievable long, medium and short term goals,” he said.
“It’s a great day for the city, especially because our executive mayor has set aside time before getting busy to see the most important people in the city of Johannesburg, the workforce that drives the delivery of services for the benefit of the residents who live within the city,” said Cllr Loyiso Masuku, a member of the Mayor’s Committee for Corporate and Shared Services of the group.
City employees welcomed the mayor’s speech and expressed excitement about what the future holds for them under the new political leadership.
