Financial company executive convicted of rape

The All Women’s Police Station (AWPS), Coimbatore Central, hired a leader of a microfinance company for raping a Coimbatore-based woman by promising to marry her.

Police said a case was filed against Anand Sharma (49), a resident of a gated community in Mogappair East in Chennai, based on the complaint filed by a 48-year-old woman from Coimbatore.

The woman complained to police that she was introduced to the accused through a dating app in early 2020.

According to the woman, who has three children in two marriages, the accused introduced himself to her as a divorced person who was raising her 13-year-old son while his ex-wife and daughter lived in Agra.

He then worked as the technical director of a microfinance company in Chennai and offered to help him reorganize and restructure his company.

The man promised to marry her and assured to help her obtain a legal separation from her second husband, according to the complaint.

The woman alleged that the accused invited her to a luxury hotel in Coimbatore on September 19, 2020 under the pretext of discussing business and imposed herself against her will.

In March 2021, she learned that the accused was not divorced and therefore cheated on her, according to the complaint.

AWPS has filed a complaint against Sharma for rape and cheating.

Her brother Prabhat Sharma was also sentenced after the woman complained of intimidating her.

Inspector Badrunnisa Begum said a detailed investigation was underway to verify the woman’s allegations.
